The report indicates an anticipation of below-normal rainfall for much of the nation, accompanied by above-normal temperatures. However, a silver lining is seen in above-normal rainfall predictions for the central interior towards the end of summer. The farming community is advised to stay vigilant by regularly checking updates, including seasonal forecasts, and utilising 7-day weather forecasts for short-term planning. Despite dryland and irrigated crops being in good condition, severe thunderstorms have caused damage in several provinces. Good rains in many areas have left the veld and livestock in reasonable to good condition. The seasonal forecast underscores the likelihood of below-normal rainfall in most regions, coupled with above-average temperatures. December and January experienced normal to above-normal rainfall, resulting in flooding and outbreaks of pests and diseases, including migratory pests. Farmers are urged to remain proactive by scouting and controlling pests, implementing relevant control measures, and considering short-term weather forecasts. The report also notes the influence of above-normal rainfall on the outbreaks of the African Army Worm in neighboring Botswana and Zimbabwe. Farmers are advised to be vigilant, report any sightings for immediate control, and implement measures such as mulching to counter evapotranspiration, given the forecasted above-normal temperatures. Livestock management is crucial, and farmers are encouraged to keep livestock in balance with the veld’s carrying capacity. Additional feed, appropriate licks, and sufficient water points, along with shelter during adverse weather conditions, are emphasized. Reports of veld fires in winter rainfall areas highlight the need for prioritized construction and maintenance of fire belts, coupled with adherence to veld fire warnings.Episodes of flooding and severe thunderstorms are predicted, accompanied by strong winds and hail. Farmers are urged to implement strategies provided in early warning information to mitigate potential damage. In conclusion, the NAC report serves as a reminder for farmers to embrace proactive measures, leverage available resources, and maintain a positive outlook in the face of weather challenges. By implementing strategies outlined in the advisory, the farming community can not only navigate the current conditions effectively but also contribute to the resilience and sustainability of the agricultural sector.
