The Portfolio Committee on Police didn’t accept a presentation from the police on an update on its forensic laboratory turnaround plan scheduled for Wednesday morning as it was received too late.
The committee has done much work the past two years on the police’s massive DNA backlog.
Committee chairperson Tina Joemat-Pettersson said the presentation only arrived at 14:30 on Tuesday, not giving the committee’s researcher enough time to prepare a research paper and several members complained that they didn’t have enough time to study the presentation.
She said she had previously indicated to the ministry and the police that presentations should reach the committee seven days in advance.
Furthermore, the meeting was scheduled two months ago.
She said new police commissioner Fannie Masemola had enough time to prepare.
The matter will be dealt with next week.
Problems with the police’s presentations to the committee has been a longstanding issue for the committee.
