Municipal intervention model is just more ANC propaganda
It is clear that the ANC government has no concrete solution for addressing the decline of municipalities countrywide, and the latest municipal intervention model is just more ANC propaganda.
This is evident in the reply by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, to a parliamentary question from the FF Plus about the progress made with the implementation of government’s regional development model.
This model aims to turn struggling local municipalities around.
President Cyril Ramaphosa was already boasting about this new policy early in 2019 when he announced that the dysfunctional Mamusa Local Municipality had already benefited from the plan.
In her reply to the FF Plus’s question, Minister Zuma said that government has already spent R88 million on rolling out the plan, but that it is still in the planning and development phase.
Thus far, offices have been leased and staff were appointed to assist with the pilot projects launched at three selected local municipalities.
The eThekwini, OR Tambo and Waterberg Municipalities were selected for this purpose.
No mention was made of any concrete interventions or any success with the restoration of service delivery at these municipalities, or anywhere else for that matter. And it has been almost four years since the model was announced with great fanfare.
At this rate, it is clear that the model is just more ANC propaganda financed with astronomical amounts of tax money while being of no benefit to the people of this country.
This state of affairs once again highlights the ANC government’s sheer inability to take decisive steps to restore basic service delivery in local municipalities.
South Africans deserve better than well-sounding ANC propaganda and promises that come to nothing.
